HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS: IF ONLY YOU WERE LONELY AT 20

Originally released in 2006, Hawthorne Heights’ If Only You Were Lonely arrived at a pivotal moment for the Dayton, Ohio group. Following the success of their debut, the band expanded their sound—balancing pop-punk, hardcore, and emo with a greater emphasis on mood, arrangement, and emotional depth. The result was a more cohesive and intentionally crafted album that would go on to reach No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and top both the Independent Albums and Top Rock Albums charts.

Craft Recordings now celebrates the album’s 20th anniversary with a vinyl reissue, arriving July 17, 2026. Available on standard black vinyl as well as multiple exclusive color variants—including Blue & Purple with Black Splatter (via the band), Pink Swirl (via Urban Outfitters), and Ink Swirl (via Craft Recordings/Victory Records)—the release revisits a defining title from the mid-2000s alternative landscape.

A BROADER, MORE CINEMATIC SOUND

Recorded in late 2005 with producer David Bendeth at Water Music Recording Studios in Hoboken, NJ, If Only You Were Lonely marked an evolution from the raw volatility of the band’s debut, The Silence in Black and White. Named after a B-side by The Replacements, the album broadens Hawthorne Heights’ sonic palette by incorporating string arrangements and piano alongside their established guitar-driven foundation.

Across its 12 tracks, the album leans into atmosphere and dynamics, pushing into more cinematic territory while maintaining the directness that defined their earlier work.

LISTENING NOTES

  • “Saying Sorry” — The lead single, and one of the band’s most recognizable songs, provides a powerful entry point to the album unfolding with an aching intensity as the lyrics reflect on emotional damage that can’t be undone.
  • “Pens and Needles” — A high-impact centerpiece, pairing heavy, riff-driven sections with emotionally charged vocal interplay. Its structure highlights the band’s ability to move between aggression and melody. One of the album’s defining moments.
  • “I Am on Your Side” — A galvanizing statement of devotion, balancing steady instrumentation with a more restrained emotional delivery.
  • “Where Can I Stab Myself in the Ears” — One of the album’s more abrasive cuts, featuring down-tuned guitars and a more aggressive vocal approach, underscoring the band’s heavier influences.

STILL CONNECTING, TWO DECADES LATER

Twenty years on, If Only You Were Lonely continues to resonate with listeners, often cited as a defining album of its era.

As frontman JT Woodruff reflects: “All you could ever want as an artist is to create music that moves the listener for an extended period of time. If Only You Were Lonely is kind of like your favorite hoodie—you keep buying new ones, but nothing quite feels like it, so you keep putting it on. It has become a comfort album to many people around the world, and to still be playing these songs after 2 decades means everything to us.”

In celebration of the anniversary, Hawthorne Heights are touring globally throughout 2026, with dates across North America, Europe, the UK, Asia, and Australia—revisiting the album in full for longtime fans and new audiences alike. View dates and ticket info at HawthorneHeights.com.
