More than five decades after Joe Henderson and his quintet took the stage at Hermosa Beach's legendary Lighthouse, At The Lighthouse: If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem returns in an expanded Deluxe Edition. Arriving November 6, the collection revisits Henderson's landmark 1970 live album with newly remastered audio, previously unreleased performances, and alternate takes drawn from the group's celebrated three-night engagement.
Available as a 3-LP set, 3-CD collection, and in digital formats, the expanded release offers the most comprehensive document yet of the band's historic Lighthouse performances. The vinyl edition, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing and housed in a triple-gatefold jacket, includes 5 previously unreleased tracks, while the CD and digital editions feature 12 previously unreleased selections.
All formats are mastered from the original analog tapes, with the newly unearthed material mixed from the original analog 4-track masters. Both physical editions also feature new liner notes by DownBeat contributor Eugene Holley, Jr., drawing on firsthand recollections from members of Henderson’s Lighthouse band, alongside reflections from Contemporary Records producer John Koenig, who assisted with the original recording.

A NEW CREATIVE CHAPTER
By 1970, Joe Henderson had already established himself as one of the leading voices in modern jazz. After moving to New York in the early ’60s, the tenor saxophonist became an in-demand sideman, recording with Horace Silver, Andrew Hill, Lee Morgan, and others, while embarking on his own prolific run for Blue Note Records.
Albums including Page One, In ’N Out, Inner Urge, and Mode For Joe established Henderson as a formidable bandleader, composer, and improviser. By the end of the decade, following a tenure as a featured member of the Herbie Hancock Sextet, Henderson entered a new phase of his career with the formation of the Joe Henderson Quintet.
Featuring trumpeter Woody Shaw, keyboardist George Cables, bassist Ron McClure, and drummer Lenny White—with percussionist Tony Waters joining on select performances—the group moved fluidly between hard bop, modal jazz, and exploratory improvisation.
THREE NIGHTS AT THE LIGHTHOUSE
In late September 1970, Henderson and his quintet settled in for a three-night engagement at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California. A nexus of the West Coast jazz scene, the storied club was an ideal setting for a band that thrived on the unpredictability of live performance.
Recorded September 24–26 and produced by Milestone Records co-founder Orrin Keepnews, the run resulted in Henderson’s first live album as a bandleader. At The Lighthouse arrived that November with six tracks, moving from the rhythmic charge of “Caribbean Fire Dance” to Henderson’s dreamlike take on Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight.” And then there’s that title: "If You’re Not Part Of The Solution, You’re Part Of The Problem," drawn from the writings of author and activist Eldridge Cleaver.
As John Koenig recalls in his accompanying reflection, Henderson was “a fount of ideas that came rapid-fire, one after the other, spontaneously, taking the music in unexpected directions.”
A 2004 reissue opened up the original tracklist with additional performances. Now, the 2026 Deluxe Edition goes deeper into those three nights than ever before, bringing more previously unheard performances and alternate takes out of the Lighthouse tapes.

"Caribbean Fire Dance" — The original album’s fiery opener, with Henderson’s tenor riding a restless groove and the quintet already firing on all cylinders.
"The Moontrane" — Woody Shaw’s composition finally emerges from the Lighthouse tapes, with plenty of room for his trumpet—and the whole band—to stretch out.
"'Round Midnight" — Henderson takes on Thelonious Monk’s standard, trading some of the set’s heat for a dreamier, late-night mood.
"Black Narcissus" — A Henderson fan-favorite, heard here in a previously unreleased Lighthouse performance that brings another essential piece of his repertoire into the set.
"If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem" — The sprawling title track lets the quintet roam. A previously unreleased alternate take gives us another trip through it.
A LASTING LEGACY
Although the Joe Henderson Quintet would continue performing together for a brief period, At The Lighthouse would prove to be the short-lived ensemble’s only recording.
Henderson’s career, however, continued to evolve. After briefly joining the pioneering jazz-rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears, he returned to his own musical pursuits, recording extensively for Milestone throughout the 1970s before experiencing a major resurgence in the ’90s through a celebrated run of albums for Verve Records.
By the time of his death in 2001, Henderson had built a four-decade body of work as a bandleader and collaborator, playing alongside artists including Chick Corea and Alice Coltrane and influencing generations of musicians.
With newly discovered performances, alternate takes, and audio sourced from the original analog tapes, At The Lighthouse: If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem (Deluxe Edition) offers the most complete portrait yet of a remarkable band captured at a pivotal moment in jazz history.
