Twenty years after its release, A Death-Grip on Yesterday returns to vinyl. Arriving October 30 via Craft Recordings, the anniversary reissue revisits the album that marked a major turning point for Atreyu, expanding the Southern California band's sound with bigger hooks and a more anthemic streak while delivering some of the biggest songs of their career.
Originally released in March 2006, A Death-Grip on Yesterday debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200, earning Atreyu their first Top 10 album and delivering fan favorites like "Creature," "The Theft," and "Shameful," alongside the breakthrough hit "Ex's and Oh's." The album will be available on black vinyl, as well as limited-edition Fire Smoke vinyl through Craft Recordings and Blazing Yellow vinyl through Revolver.
Atreyu has also returned "Her Portrait in Black" to digital platforms. Originally recorded during the A Death-Grip on Yesterday sessions but left off the album, the fan-favorite track appeared on the soundtrack to the 2006 action-horror film Underworld: Evolution and is now back on streaming services.

FEARLESS LEAPS FORWARD
By the mid-2000s, Atreyu had already established themselves as one of metalcore's defining bands. Following the breakout success of Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses and the Gold-certified The Curse, the band had become a fixture of the era's heavy music landscape through relentless touring including a run on the Warped Tour.
When the group entered the studio in 2005 with producer Josh Abraham, they set out to push beyond the boundaries of their established sound. With Alex Varkatzas on vocals, Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel on guitars, Marc McKnight on bass/vocals, and Brandon Saller on drums/vocals, the nine-song A Death-Grip on Yesterday maintained the aggression and intensity of their earlier work while pushing further into melody and bigger, more anthemic territory.
Looking back, Saller called it “the first album we made where we took fearless leaps into the unknown.” Those leaps landed: the album became the band's highest-charting release to date and their first to crack the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.
BIGGER HOOKS, SAME HEART
While A Death-Grip on Yesterday introduced a more melodic side of Atreyu, it never abandoned the heaviness that had defined the band's early years. Across just nine songs, the band moves between hard-charging riffs, huge choruses, and more melodic territory, with “Creature” and “Our Sick Story (Thus Far)” keeping one foot firmly planted in the ferocity of their earlier records.
It was a compact record, but a big step outward—giving clean vocals and melody more room while keeping the riffs, screams, and intensity firmly intact. Twenty years later, that tension between Atreyu's heavier roots and where they were headed next is a big part of what makes the album tick.
LISTENING NOTES
"Creature" — The album wastes no time: its opener keeps Atreyu's early ferocity front and center while hinting at the bigger sound to come.
"Shameful" — Melody and muscle in equal measure, with Brandon Saller's clean vocals taking a bigger role alongside the band's heavier attack.
"The Theft" — One of the album's boldest departures: a slow-burning, melodic turn complete with clean vocals and keyboards that showed just how far Atreyu was willing to stretch.
"Ex's and Oh's" — The breakout: a No. 24 Mainstream Rock hit that jumped from rock radio to Madden NFL 07, Guitar Hero II, and even Jersey Shore.
"Our Sick Story (Thus Far)" — A turn back toward classic Atreyu, pairing screamed verses and heavy riffs with the bigger melodic chorus that defined this era.
STILL GOING STRONG
A Death-Grip on Yesterday captured Atreyu at a pivotal moment, as the band tested just how far it could push beyond its metalcore roots.
The momentum didn't stop there. Atreyu headed from the album's release into the Taste of Chaos tour and 2006 Ozzfest, before signing with Hollywood Records and reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with 2007's Lead Sails Paper Anchor.
In 2026, Atreyu is still going strong, with ten studio albums now to their name, including this year's The End Is Not the End.
